LAV Filters are a set of DirectShow filters based on the libavformat and libavcodec libraries from the FFmpeg project, which will allow you to play virtually any format in a DirectShow player.
ffdshow was the first project/package that provided the ability to leverage the FFmpeg & Libav filters via DirectShow. The project languished and was reinvigorated as ffdshow tryouts.
This version is from 2010, when they were still distributing ffdshow with all of the encoders.
FYI - There are newer projects that provide this capability, such as LAV Filters.
