Apple has a new tool for those who manage a herd of iPads or iPhones for schools or small businesses, a free Mac app aimed at making life easier for iOS-focused IT staff. Called Configurator, it allows admins to "mass configure and deploy iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch," 30 devices at a time.
In planning video production sessions for the November LEVA conference, LEVA would like to know what system you use to produce videos. For example, Final Cut Pro, Sony Vegas, Avid, Adobe Premiere, etc. It will help us tailor subject areas that helps ensure the best possible training is provided.
Please direct your responses and any other suggested production topics to Mr. Jan Garvin, LEVA Training VP at training@leva.org.
A few words of inspiration from JFK, along with a little nonsense from me on this Independence Day.
Happy 4th of July my friends. Hoping you're having a great day & spreading ❤
Dear Media-Geek members:
You clearly represent a group of professionals who would add value to our newly formed Association of Forensic Multimedia Analysis (AFMA). Our shared goal is to improve the effectiveness of Forensic Multimedia Analysts. This group includes anyone who analyzes or processes multimedia evidence, including images, video, audio and digital data.
Wrapping up my weekend and feeling pretty good about the things I ticked off my internal, MFT-like to-do list. Implemented SSL encryption for the new LEVA website, integrated Authorize.net secure payment processing on the new LEVA site, and I put the finishing touches on several of the pieces for this week’s DCCTV recovery training in Tacoma, WA.
I probably won’t be posting here much this week, but you can’t shut me up on Facebook and Twitter, because I share to those while reading my news and researching (i.e. always). It is now an instinctual process and, thanks to those of you who occasionally send feedback, one that makes me feel good. No cute animal pics though; I share those to my personal Facebook friends, because animals are cute…but not really related to digital & multimedia evidence.
Okay, done rambling. Hope you had a great weekend my friends, and here’s to another week of doing what we love. Be safe out there. All the best.
Zdenek Kalal’s Predator object-tracking software is almost uncanny. Show anything to its all-seeing camera eye, and it will quickly learn to recognize it and then track it, whether it fades into the distance, hides amongst other similar objects or — in the case of faces turns sideways.

I was out in the Seattle area Tuesday along with my colleague Ed Baker to provide a couple of free seminars on digital video evidence for members of the Washington Homicide Investigators Association (WHIA).
Many thanks to WHIA for the opportunity and hospitality, as well as to our employer Ocean Systems for their dedication to, and continued support of educating the LE community on the multitude of issues related to digital & multimedia evidence.
LEVA has announced a special reduced pricing package to help government agencies meet their training requirements in these challenging economic times.
As of January 1, 2009, LEVA will bundle its prestigious 40-hour core training courses and others, providing significant cost reductions. All courses are conducted at LEVAs Digital Multimedia Evidence Processing Lab at the University of Indianapolis, Indiana. Visit the LEVA Website for complete details.
Community member Jimmy Schroering has launched a new site called DMEforensics.com. Jimmy's old domain jdsdevelopment.com will redirect to his new site, but only for the next week or so. Take a moment to visit & bookmark today.
Many in the Forensic Video community are familiar with the free multimedia tools Camsort and IMAGE. Their creator, Jimmy Schroering, has published a new consolidated home for these applications, along with other tools that he's developed or may be working on; check it out by visiting www.jdsdevelopment.com
A DVR comes in to the lab and there’s not a single label on it. No identifying marks, labels, nada. The owner has no clue where it came from, nor any manuals or documentation. Sweet.
Well, in the past, one of the tricks of the trade was to take a photo (or two) and drop it in to Google image search. With any luck you stumble upon one that looks just like it. Success! Not so fast zippy, it’s rarely that easy, but I thought the following was worth pointing out.
Bing has now joined the image search game too, so the next time you’re in a similar pickle, be sure to give them both a shot at it. Good luck!
